Wrestling With Purpose

Many people know Beth Piner as a backbone of operations, planning, and pretty much everything in-between at West Coast General Building Contractors. But one of the lesser-known and unexpected hats that she wears is “Coach Beth”, the first female head wrestling coach in San Diego County.

Both Beth and Parker grew up in disadvantaged environments and their experiences with hardship, hard work, and opportunity have greatly defined their approach to not only how they operate West Coast but also the personal importance of youth engagement and involvement.

Beth was unexpectedly introduced to wrestling in 2015 when their son tried out for the team as a freshman at Point Loma High School and it immediately resonated with her.
Much like our team at West Coast GBC, the wrestling team was like a diverse family, that was not only willing to give kids a chance but collectively rallied for each person's success. Regardless of weight, gender, means, or race, everyone was welcome. As a “no-cut” sport the wrestling team offered a truly inclusive and supportive environment that gave everyone an opportunity.

Beth and Parker initially became involved through their son and were quickly asked if they would become coaches to support the team at tournaments. By their son’s Senior year, Parker had taken to supporting Beth as she balanced being full-time with both West Coast GBC and the wrestling team. PLHS Head Wrestling Coach, Coach Lam approached Beth to ask if she would take over his position after 27 years leading the team. With the full weight of her family and West Coast’s support, Beth accepted the position, becoming the first female head coach in the County (and quite possibly beyond!).

In the relatively short time that Beth has been the head of the team, there have been both performance achievements including continued growth in female members, and last year three students qualified but there have also been deeply rewarding personal outcomes. Beth has personally worked with students to improve their grades, coordinating support and resources for vulnerable teens and there have even been the occasional students that have been found in our offices getting help with their homework!

Although the Covid-19 pandemic kept everyone off the mat, the shift to maintaining a sense of community and emotional well-being amongst the team, led to an even greater sense of purpose throughout the last year. With the recent green light to return to training, the team has already grown by 40% this year! As 2021 shapes up to be West Coast’s biggest year to date, Coach Beth never ceases to amaze us or our clients with her ability to deftly navigate and balance everything she has going on!
